I have recently bought the HTC Hero from Sprint. I was little disappointed when i switched on the device. The device offers more than what the end user needs and it becomes very handy once you start customizing the device based on your life style. The device is very sleek and compact than any other Android device currently available in the market. The device comes with the basic apps that is good to enough to start with. However the Android market provides tons of free and paid apps for the user. All you need to do is to download the apps based on your interest and you are all set to go.
You might hear lot of stereo type comments about the performance of the device and the battery usage. I have been using this device for about a month and the battery performance is not that bad. All you need to do is download the Advanced Task Killer and clear out all the unused processes. This would significantly improve the battery life and performance of your device. The device supports the multi process but you have to watch out it will easily drain out your battery.
My favorite apps are,
Google Apps
The google apps are the killer apps. if you have a Google account you can synchronize all your contacts, mails, appointments, documents, tasks and etc. I love it. The Google map is handy for those who travel a lot.

Restaurants and Shopping Apps
Yelp, Aloqa locale, where,CNET Scanner are the best in the Android market.
Entertainment
Pandora, Shazam, A online Radio and Music are the good ones. The youtube is not playing the videos for some reason.
Tools
Astro, dolphin browser, pic say, uninstaller are the few good ones.
Finance
I am concerned about using the financial applications. The hackers are successful in breaking into the financial apps. You have to be cautious before you are considering any app.
My Favorite Features are,

The device provides the extended screen that comes with the seven screen panels. You can drag and drop around 100 apps. It is more than what you need.

The device acts as a small laptop. You can do multitasking.
